A single decision by the County Commissioners may effect all of our lives for years to come. The best solutions require a thoughtful examination of all sides of an issue. An effective leader must welcome debate and dissent in order to balance the needs of many different individuals and communities.

One easy way to encourage participation and keep the public informed, is to televise the public comment portion of all County Commission meetings. This provides a greater opportunity for citizens to be heard and also provides accountability and transparency in our county government.

Another effective way to reach out to more people in Buncombe County is to hold Commissioner meetings in all 7 school districts on a predetermined yearly schedule. This offers greater access to residents who may not otherwise attend meetings due to travel time and rising gas prices. It also ensures that the Commissioners focus on the needs of all areas of the county.

It is not possible for everyone to always get everything they want, but by encouraging public dialogue and electing County Commissioners who will listen to the people, everyone’s lives will be improved.
